About this course

Join us beginning on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM Central Time*, for a live, instructor-led, online course on Coding from Notes in a Family Medicine setting.  This is the final installment of the Family Medicine Coding 3-part series. In this course, students will learn how to code from the Progress notes, just like experienced family medicine coders do.

Course Material

A CPT manual is recommended but not required.  A Family Medicine Superbill will be provided and may be used in lieu of a manual; however, locating the codes using the CPT manual will be demonstrated during the class.  The course is based on the 2024 AMA CPT Professional.  A free PDF of the ICD-10-CM and HCPCS manual will be provided.

Course Outline

Students will learn how to abstract the services, procedures, and diagnoses from the Progress notes.  Subsequently, they will assign the CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes. The progress notes will be based on the services and procedures shown below.

This course is designed for anyone interested in starting a career as a medical coder. It’s also for experienced medical coders, who are interested in working in a Family Medicine setting.

Prerequisites

We recommend knowledge of Medical Terminology; however, it is not required for this course. If you have not taken a Medical Terminology course, then you may use a medical dictionary, search engine for terms, or a Medical Terminology book, such as Ann Ehrlich’s “Medical Terminology for Health Professions”.  Used Medical Terminology books are also available for purchase online and may be used with this course.
